Why Further Is Better For Boosting Wireless Networks

Broadband penetration in the US has grown to the point that most people are familiar with either DSL, cable, satellite, fiber or some other form of broadband access. Because many homes with broadband access have more than one computer, many consumers are familiar with wireless routers and creating ad hoc or P2P networks between the computers in their homes. One of the most annoying problems with a wireless router can be the lack of signal strength. Fortunately there are several way of boosting the strength of the signal.

Wifi signal booster software for the most part will simply give you an indication of how strong a wifi signal is. This type of software will scan for the areas where the signal strength is the strongest. There are other programs like Cantennator that will show you how to design an antenna enhancer or you can find several online videos that will walk you through DIY antenna enhancers.

A USB amplifier with wifi signal booster software becomes a directional antenna and will even use other hotspots to boost your signal strength. Some of these devices advertise a range of up to 300 meters enabling you to connect to the internet from nearly anywhere in the home.

Knowing the places in the home where the signal strength is the strongest will aid in placement of devices other than your laptops and desktops, such as gaming consoles like the Nintendo Wii or Xbox. For other mobile devices like mobile phones or the iPad there are applications like Airgrab that act as wifi radar and determine where to find the nearest hotspot with the strongest signal.

Ultimately the best ways to boost the signal strength of your WAP is to buy a wireless router with a high gain antenna and to enhance that antenna with any of the various DIY enhancements that you can find online. A simple parabola made of aluminum foil and attached to the antenna on your router should boost signal as much as 50%. When boosting the signal you need to keep in mind that you are increasing the opportunities for unauthorized access to your network and you should have appropriate security on your new wider area network.
